Sierra Vista and Fort Huachuca
Sierra
Vista is the largest city and commercial center of Cochise County.
It boasts a variety of unique, historical, and natural experiences.
If you love the outdoors and endless starry nights, Sierra Vista offers
it all, including the nearby San Pedro National Conservation Area,
regarded as one of the nation's most popular bird watching locations.
Fort
Huachuca, current home of Military Intelligence, continues to preserve
the rich history of this area and holds an important modern role in
protecting the nation.
Benson
and the San Pedro Valley
Benson
is Cochise County’s gateway and home to the famous Kartchner
Caverns State Park in the Whetstone Mountains. Another favorite in
this area is the Holy Trinity Monastery; eco-tourists can enjoy the
1.3 mile-long bird sanctuary. For an excellent experience in northern
Cochise County, taking the Benson Historic Walking Tour is a superb
way to explore the town.
Bisbee
Located
at over 5000 ft. in the Mule Mountains, Bisbee was put on the map
after becoming one of the most successful copper mining towns in the
U.S. It is now proud to host a thriving arts and antiquing community
with numerous shops, restaurants, and galleries lining Main Street,
including the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum (a Smithsonian
Institute affiliate). Another exciting adventure can be had on the
famous Queen Mine Tours.
Douglas
and Sonora Mexico
Douglas
and its surrounding area is host to a wealth of attractions for the
eco-tourist. Wide streets in old downtown Douglas are lined with historic
buildings including the Gadsden Hotel, one of the last of the turn-of-the-century's
grand hotels. Nearby is the historic John Slaughter Ranch Museum as
well as the international border crossing into Agua Prieta, Sonora
– the entrance to beautiful northern Mexico. Busy streets are
filled with store fronts and restaurants, and the downtown square
houses the Iglesia de Guadalupe.
Tombstone
Tombstone,
The Town Too Tough To Die, is a Registered Historic National Landmark
that provides the ultimate experience for recounting and re-enacting
the days of famous old west history. The same streets that Wyatt Earp
and Doc Holliday once walked are now a haven for tourists. Many of
the must-see sites in Tombstone include the OK Corral, Big Nosed Kate's,
the Crystal Palace, Boothill Cemetery, Tombstone Courthouse State
Park, and the Bird Cage Theater. A stroll through Tombstone is something
all visitors and new residents of Cochise County should experience.
Willcox
Willcox
was once the largest beef-producing town in the U.S. and was known
as the "Cattle Capital of the West". Today, Willcox is better
known for its successful agriculture industry, especially apples.
The Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Rex Allen Museum and the Chiricahua Regional
Museum and Research Center are all located in Willcox. Just a short
drive away are some of the most impressive natural landscapes in the
southwest: Cochise Stronghold, Chiricahua National Monument, and the
Willcox Playa.
